Heroes or villains? Unmasking risk in undefined supervision in practice

In this interactive session, supervision takes center stage, but is it a safeguard or a source of risk? When supervision roles, responsibilities, and expectations are undefined or left out of regulation, the results can lead to confusion, liability, and ethical violations that impact both professionals and the public.

Using real-world scenarios, participants will explore how vague or missing supervision standards create scope-of-practice risks. Through interactive peer-to-peer sharing, attendees will identify risks to strengthen supervision as a core component of competent, ethical social work.

Learning objectives

  1. Analyze how undefined supervision practices can contribute to ethical breaches, scope-of-practice considerations, and regulatory challenges
  2. Evaluate supervision scenarios through a regulatory lens to identify risk points
  3. Identify at least two best practices or policy strategies that promote clearer supervisory standards
