Progress toward understanding the impact licensing policies have on scaling up the social work workforce and mitigating harm

This session explores Dr. Hooley’s innovative research aimed at creating a web-based tool to assess the impact of licensing laws on the size of the social work workforce and the safety of services. The tool is designed to allow policy makers the flexibility of testing various licensing policies and combinations (e.g., exam requirements, experience requirements, supervision requirements) in a virtual environment to see the predicted impact of those decisions overtime. This proof-of-concept study is calibrated using real-world data from the Utah regulatory context.

Learning objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Explain how system dynamics can be used to study the effects of regulation on the social work workforce
  2. Describe the effects of at least two regulation scenarios on the size of the social work workforce and the safety of services.
