A. Kai Mumpfield, LICSW, PIP, is an Alabama native with strong roots in the community, is an advocate for youth, a leader in her community, and is committed to building strong communities for children, youth, and families to thrive. With over 20 years of experience in the field, working across Child Welfare, HIV/AIDS, and Clinical practice areas, Kai strives to be a change maker from micro to macro level systems. Kai believes in moving strategically, purposefully, and with intentionality, understanding that growth comes from being developed through every experience and place of service. This growth has allowed Kai to present at local and national conferences, such as the 49th Annual National Black Child Development Institute in 2019, serve as a Noontime Knowledge presenter for the University of Alabama School of Social Work, and coordinate the annual statewide permanency conferences over multiple years. Her leadership and advocacy have allowed her to be a 2021 International HBCU fellow and a faculty cohort leader for the Washington D.C. Policy and Advocacy Fly-In during the 2023-2025 years. In addition, she concurrently held the Presidency for the Alabama Conference of Social Work board in 2021 and 2022 while also being the chair of the Alabama Board of Social Work Examiners (2021-2024), where she served two terms from 2020 – 2025. During her two terms, she was a part of substantive change to the code with data-driven improvements to the supervision regulations, passage of the Interstate Compact, and corresponding language added to the rules, as well as being a part of the efforts to update the laws to allow clinical social workers to diagnose with corresponding language in the rules. Kai believes her work is not just “work” but service to mankind and continues to embrace opportunities to further her growth as she prepares the next generation of Social Workers in her role as an educator in the Department of Social Work at Alabama State University.
